Right before Labor Day, I drove to Ann Arbor to visit some friends who live there.
I had some time to kill the next day, so I drove over to the U of Michigan Music Building on the North Campus. (Nostalgia, nostalgia!)
Since I had been there last, they have put an addition on the building which now houses the Steans Collection of Muscial Instruments. As I browsed through the collection, what do I see in front of me but a Mozart-era basset horn. You know, the kind that's all weird angles and made of that lovely Turkish Boxwood.
My fingers ACHED to get my hands on it.
Sadly, it was behind glass, and no "curators" were present.
Was a pretty sight, I wanted to touch it, savor it, play it, see what made it "tick".
One of my long-range ambitions is to someday make reproductions of antique clarinets. How I wanted to get my hands on this one, and measure it, and examine it.
Oh well, someday.
Tony Pay - I bet you can tell us dozens of stories about examining clarinets like this one.
What's the point of this post? Gosh, I don't know! But I sure wish I could hear Basset Horns as Mozart heard them.
