At any rate, I just looked up "obligatto" in my music dictionary:

"A part, usually instrumental, which cannot be dispensed with in
performance [....] in the 19th century, the term was appled in the
opposite sense to an additional part which is optional."

well, you can relax, I'm not going ballistic this time.... and I
do understand what you're saying.
