I have sometimes tried to tell my students about the 2nd part in certain
duets being an "obble-gobble" (obligatto) ANNIE

Subject: [kl] Accompaniment vs. duet

In music for more than one instrument (I happen to be dealing with a
duet at the moment), I have begun to think about the fact that, in some
music, a particular part should be thought of as "accompaniment" ---
namely, background support for the other parts in the music --- and in
other music, two parts should be thought of as separate melodies which
play against each other and each makes its own independent statement and
neither of them is simply 'support' for the other.

Obviously one way to address this issue is to listen (either physically
or in your imagination) and then to make your decision. Another way is
to pay attention to whatever markings & instructions are written in
music.

So my question has to do with what is written on paper: Is there a
particular method of instruction or marking or 'cue' that gives an
experienced player direction in this regard even though it does say
specifically "This is accompaniment" or "This is supposed to be the
major statement" or "Play this to balance the statement by <some other
instrument or section>"?

Thank you,
Bill
