Dan,
I've had this happen to ME, as well as to students. It has to do with the
strength (or lack thereof) of the "glottal stop" - that membrane between the
throat and the nasal cavity. If it is weakened, as in from too much playing (or
even, like me, allergies), it will not withstand the pressure and will allow
one to aspirate (?) from the throat to the nose. The only solution I can think
of is exactly what you have recommended. Let the membrane firm up again.
