Virginia, not all Christians are cultural and religious bigots. Many
people in my faith, the Menonite Church, have gone to great lengths to
help the Palestinian peoples of the world receive fairness and civil
rights. In NYC the Manhattan Mennonite Fellowship has a liason with the
United Nations where they spend their entire days trying to help. The
last time I went to Manhattan, I stayed at the "Menno House" in the
Village, and there were 2 lovely Moslem women staying in the house,
testifying about their problems before the Mennonite Central Committee
liason in the UN. Most of the members of the Manhattan Mennonite
Fellowship voted for Ralph Nader. One reason why I joined the Mennonite
church is because I love to make gorgeous quilts, and the Mennonites
have "Relief Sales" all over the US where our lovely quilts, (many of
them completely hand sewn in Amish tradition), are auctioned off. The
profits all go for disasters. Last year our Mennonite Relief Sale in
Rocky Ford, Colorado, raised over $100,000. I would like to think that a
couple of the quilts I submitted may have made a difference in
somebody's life, somewhere. Even if I were to become an Atheist, I would
still make quilts with Mennonite Women, because I like their values. We
are not all a bunch of fundamentalist, right-wing extremists. Many of
our modern day Mennonites have become professors of Comparative
Religion, and have made life long liasons with people of all faiths,
including agnosics and atheists. ANNIE

Subject: [kl] This horrible event

Colleagues,

This tragedy has numbed us here - like everyone, we're shocked by the sheer
callousness of the acts and wish with every fibre of our beings for the
welfare of those who are rescuing and deep sorrow at the loss of so many
innocent lives. Requests for or exhortations to "prayer" are inclusive
(even an atheist like myself can adapt such sentiments to my own ethical
code), welcome and understandable in a time when words fail. However, the
forced injunctions to Bible verses and fellowship "in Christ" by a small
fundamentalist minority of this list has made me feel marginalised and has
only managed to divide this group. And, if it has marginalised me (who has
at least Christian ancestry and cultural associations), just think what this
does to Muslims, for instance.

It is a time for uniting in our commonality - in our horror of the act, in
our insistence that the guilty are found and punished according to due
process without harming more innocent people - not dividing up according to
our religions and national identities. And if you have any Muslim
neighbours, smile and say hello (as you would do any day) to let them know
that this horrible event will not divide you as people into bigoted hatred.
As decent people they will be as horrified and saddened by the events of
this week as you are.

Best,

Virginia
