"Timber, The Flute Tutor" is not a method book, and it deals only with
Irish traditional music on keyless D flutes -- jigs, reels, polkas,
hornpipes, and slides.
But there is enough "beginner" information and historical information in
it to keep a beginner occupied and to add dimension to exploring the
flute. It's a $5-$10 book (44 pages) with lots of historical
photographs as well as photos of proper embouchure, etc. This book
might relieve the boredom inherent in many method books for keyed metal
flutes.
It might also demand more concentration than a grade school student
wants to devote. There's truly a lot of information in it, including
pages devoted to the dynamic differences between various traditional
dances, how to change tone, ornamentations such as "cranning" and
"rolls", a lecture and gruesome photograph against smoking, etc.
As I understand it, "timber" is what people used to call out when they
heard a traditional flutist who had it all together.
