The following was posted tonight from Orchestra-L. Under the
circumstances I'm going to copy it verbatim.

NYC Opera Cancels Tonight's Opening
By Shirley Fleming

September 11, 2001

NEW YORK -- New York City Opera has cancelled its gala opening night
performance of "The Flying Dutchman" on Tuesday following the terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Center. Telephone calls to the company are
answered by a taped message saying that the offices are closed, and all
scheduled activity including rehearsals are called off. The offices of
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic are closed as well.

(note: I've received email both from the New York offices of the AFM
and from the ASOL; They report that staff is all OK, that phone
service is sporadic, and that staff are trying to figure out how to
get home tonight. - Robert Levine)
