I did know Howarth once to send an Alto saxophone on a lonely taxi ride to
the Purcell room, on an mercy mission for a student who had damaged his/hers
the day of a performance. It think it was a student-grade instrument, but
maybe you'd be surprised what they'll do if you ask them nicely (I mean
Howarth, though the same applies to the instrument i'm sure!). And Ill bet
the taxi driver dined out for weeks on that story - in the end the
instrument wasn't needed, but it was a nice day out for the little sax. I
wonder if you could write a children's picture book based on this idea? Ah,
if instruments could speak................
