Thanks to Chris for posting this very sad news. I have made many trips to
Matson over the years. I enjoyed going to see him both for his mouthpiece
knowledge and to visit. With his handmade tools and popsicle sticks, he was
like an old style craftsman who did his marvelous work through experience,
instinct and feel. He was indeed generous with his knowledge. In many ways,
I feel that he had as big an influence on my playing as many of my teachers.

I enjoyed hearing his stories of players and teachers from the past and
would never tire of his anecdotes of the many players who have passed
through his doors. As time passed, my visits grew longer and he educated me
on the pleasures of single malt scotch!

I will miss him very much, but his contributions to the clarinet community
will long be remembered. Later today, I'll have to have a scotch in his
memory.
