Heidi -

Why not soak your reeds about 5 minutes or so in 3% hydrogen peroxide after
each use, then rinse in cool water and squeeze the water out of the reed
with your thumb and index finger. I do this and then after they dry
overnight flat side up, I burnish them with the convex side of a spoon on
both sides of the reed. Be careful burnishing the flat side, hold it
firmly.

While I don't play professionally, I get a lot of practice hours out of each
reed. I also rotate using four or five good reeds. I believe that the
"rest" between uses benefits the longevity of reeds.

None of this is original. It was gleaned from several postings on the list
a number of years ago. They can be found in the Archives.

(Listers: Let's not have any arguments about the safety of using 3%
peroxide. It can be used as a mouthwash or gargle. A 10% solution might be
another matter - I've never seen such a product on the market.)

One way that I have found to make my clarinet reeds
last longer is that when they start to get old,I soak
them in hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide
cleans out the cane, which often makes the reed play
better and last longer.
