Subject: [kl] Editions

Around 20 years ago, in London, as a well-known clarinet player, I was
invited by the then representative of Universal Edition to produce
editions of the some of the more substantial works of the clarinet
repertoire.

What I replied was, that we didn't *need* more editions. What we needed
was holographs of the composers' manuscripts.
<<snip>>
Universal Edition didn't take up my suggestion, but, *shame on them*.
We now have Pamela Weston's efforts.

I am a fan of the (ed. Weston) Fentone edition of the Weber repertoire for
just this reason. I currently only own a couple of these, but in the ones I
own, Weber's original is ostensibly reproduced in the piano part. (i.e.
piano staves with 2 clarinet lines - urtext and edited). Such a shame they
don't actually _print_ a part without the editor's changes/enhancements. At
least I did get an email from Fentone confirming that I was free to copy the
"Weber original" part to do with as I pleased. I've still to do this (oh for
a full copy of Sibelius instead of the demo....)

Regards,

Ian
