If there's no copyright and copying is allowed, then why intentionally add a
wrong note? Tracing the source for what reason?

Original maps are eminently copyrightable. Trivial additions are sometimes
made, but not to the point of grievous misdirection; e.g., roads are not
changed, but a town lying in an area with no road may be added.

Once the map is in the PD it's just like music - you can copy it, errors and
all.

If it was published in the US it's not protected if the music is in the PD -
fonts and typography used to make the edition are not protectable. Other
countries have very different laws.

Unfortunately at the moment I have neither the time nor the money to go
after some publishers I specifically know about. Hopefully I'll have both in
a few more years ...
