It's real, especially among obscure small-time publishers,
but we all know how absurdly error-ridden Kalmus parts are
(not exactly a low-volume publisher) and that's not just
careless editing. The opposite, in fact, despite the
equivocal substance it adds to one's attempt at produ-
cing a copyrightable edition of a work. If you're lucky,
the wrong notes are blatant, i.e., they alter the har-
mony so grossly that you can't possibly think that it
was originally written that way, and then you can cor-
rect it before moving on. I played a fl/cl/bsn trio
not long ago where, for four bars in the middle of the
piece -- in the middle of a phrase, in fact, -- the
flute part had been transposed up a half-step. It e-
voked chuckles from the three of us at the time, and
we even played it that way a few times just for the
humor of it, but I was silently annoyed that the
publisher had done this. There are honest mistakes
in some editions out there, but the intentional ones
balance those out pretty well.
