David:
This gets into dangerous territory. Am I conscious of the difference over
the break just because I'm a clarinettist - or do I really hear it? Most
competetent clarinettists have a seamless sound; but (in my opinion) that
sound often sacrifices the special quality of the chalumeau tones. It
depends upon the player, the instrument - and even the passage. If I have
an exposed part that only goes to a written 3rd line B (sometimes 3rd space
C) and emphasizes the chalumeau tones I will often use my right hand first
finger to make the notes sound in the chalumeau. Why hide it?
