I know this works. My teachers through the years have given me various tips to "open the reed". I've used those little calendars you get from restaurants and cut them in half; alto sax reeds, which are a little too big; and other clarinet reeds, usually no longer playable. My current favorite is a "medium" guitar pick. This is lasting longer than the others. Sometimes, I lightly rub the flat side of the reed at an angle across my barrell. I do this if I forget to bring one of my "reedjuvinators." (I stole that from Sidney Forrest who taught me most of my tricks).
