I loved this post. I play with a community orchestra whose librarian copies every part prior to handing it out (talk about illegal). So I just ENJOY getting a copied part with markings all over it. Not only is it a bad copy, but I can hardly read the notes with the penciled in sharps or flats marked on top of them. Never mind the key signature already makes this clear.

I finally got smart and used the tiny Post-It notes a few months ago when I did "Oliver!". There is nothing worst than erasing a book after a show. The music directors usually insist you erase it before handing it in. I wondered if the audience could hear the sounds of our erasers during the show.

I'm surprise more publishers aren't as strict about returning clean orchestral parts as the publishers for show books. I think they impose fines if books aren't erased.
