That's a nifty history, Ed!

It surprised me how often, when I sat down in a pub, someone would ask
me if I was in Ireland to discover my Irish heritage. Since I don't
have one (that I know of), I always had to answer, "No, I'm just a
tourist." But the frequency with which I was asked this question shows
how strong the appeal of having a heritage is. Clearly it's a more
fundamental emotion than (say) which flavor of ice cream you like or
which football team you support or such.
