I think the blow-out idea is very useful:

I got my A clarinet as a 'used up' instrument for a good price.
(very big grin).
And like any good joke, this is (largely) true.

The other angle, we change throughout our lives (physically, mentally),
and may find different (or) new equipment more suitable. Karl Leister
made this comment at Fest, and it makes sense.

There is some balance between always searching for the magic, perfect
equipment, and never trying anything new.

And it is fun to try out new toys.

Drifting a bit off from the original question, yes, but part of the
overall context.
