Subj: [kl] Aha! Setting the record straight about bagpipes

Someone who I met in Ireland sent me an article from an Irish newspaper
about the champion bagpiper.

Those of you who compared bagpipes to lawn mowers may feel that your
opinions are re-affirmed by this article:

"A Ballybunion man who has been acclaimed as the King of the Pipers will
put his All Ireland title on the line at the Listowel Fleadh on Sunday
as he aims to become the first piper to win six senior war pipe titles
in a row. [....] Those in the know in traditional circles say Danny
[Houlihan] has brought a new style to pipe playing - just as Sharon
Shannon has transformed the music of the accordion. [...] Danny will be
performing some of his own compositions [rather than traditional bagpipe
music] ...."

- Kerry's Eye, 23 August 2001

Evidently what I heard was truly a new form of bagpipe playing, and
those of you who know only the traditional style may be justified in
your criticisms.

.... and it's fun to think that, by accident, I may have heard in person
the beginning of a new form of music.

Cheers,
Bill
