I'm a not very experienced amateur who got to play the (4th part, I
think...the one that includes the bass clarinet part) Mahler Symphony #1
with a community orchestra. No one had any problem with me playing the
entire 4th movement which is written for C clarinet on my Bb, but it was out
of the question for me to play the short klezmer-like Eb part in the 3rd
movement on Bb. Since I had neither access to nor experience with an Eb, it
was covered by one of the other clarinetists.

Do you think it was because it was played together with the other Eb, or is
there just a more pronounced difference transposing from Eb to Bb than from
C to Bb? I had wondered at the time if they were just afraid to trust me
with that very exposed part.
