This whole idea of a "sonic palette" seems to imply that there is a specific
way the clarinet should sound in relation to the rest of the orchestra. It
seems to me that this palette would be more disrupted by a change in players
than a change in a player's instrument. The difference between Karl Leister
on Bb and Richard Stoltzman on Bb is far more obvious than when Leister
switches from Bb to A.
