<< I definitely think that, A clarinet has a different timbre than Bb. >>

All the way from fifth grade on, my father told me that he could pick my
clarinet sound out of whatever group I was playing in. I assumed it was a
giant load of crap, because most of the time I could barely hear my*self*
playing in those bands...

About three years ago I was finishing my grad work, and we were doing a
concert I thought my parents would enjoy, so I invited them to come listen.
They hadn't heard me perform for a number of years, and I had changed my
playing significantly in that time and also had different horns and different
mouthpieces.

Anyway, after the concert, we were standing around outside the restaurant
before dinner, and my father (who is not a musician) randomly asked me, "Were
you playing a different clarinet for the Tchaikovsky?" My honest reaction
was, "Huh?"

He continued, "No, really, was it a different clarinet than what you were
playing for the other pieces?" In my mind I was trying to figure out if he
could have seen what horn I had from the audience. To buy some more time to
think, I stalled, "Why do you ask?"

He answered, "It had a darker, mellower sound. I thought it might be a
different clarinet."

I've never doubted Dad since.
