I highly recommend Sean's sonata for several reasons. First of all, it is a
superb work, beautifully written for the instrument. Sean, as one of the
world's outstanding eflat professionals, understands better than the majority
of composers what the eflat clarinet is and what it isn't. Second, although
the Sonata is extremely difficult, it's difficulties fall into areas in which
proficiency is necessary. This is especially true of rhythm, the last
movement being particularly tricky. The rhythm of this movement presents big
problems, it is the type of thing that seperates those who can really count
from those who can't (there isn't a useful middle ground here).

I hope that those on the list with the skills necessary to play this work and
other works by Sean will take the opportunity to do so. As those of you who
have heard my cd know, I have played a lot of music written by clarinet
players. Sean is as good a composer as any of them, and he is still composing.
