Subj: [kl] Arguments about Mouthpieces
Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 22:11:30 -0400

Dear Roger & Walter,
When I went to ClarinetFest and had the pleasure of knowing Audrey,
on our list, she made me aware of something I had never really
considered before. Audrey and I were having a "conversation" about
mouthpieces, and she brought out the point that often a clarinetist will
sound pretty much the same, no-matter what mouthpiece they play. I
thought about her comment and have to agree that I personally have
sounded pretty much the same, whether on my old Kasper 13 that got
stolen, or on my replacement Vandoren 5RV, or later on my 5RV Lyre, or
later yet on my Clark Fobes San Francisco, also the Fobes Debut (for my
students).
I don't want to minimize the importance of having a quality
mouthpiece, but for me personally, I don't ever want to get into an
argument about mouthpieces again. I just want to sound good. I have
heard a couple of my beginners sound o.k. on their "Goldentone" that
came with the clarinet, although I was relieved when they were able to
move up to Clark's "Debut". ANNIE
