Keep in mind that your high school band director was probably trying to
achieve the best balance he could with the resources available. In my
experience as a school services rep for a music store, I hear band
directors constantly complaining about the lack of low brass players (often
accompanied by an overabundance of saxophones). I can understand his
reluctance to release a trombone player, although, if he really understood
that you intended to pursue clarinet on the college level, it would appear
to be rather shortsighted on his part.
