Hi everyone!

Hope you're all enjoying the tail end of summer.
ClarinetFest sounded great, 1100 of us is a heck of a
lot of reed angst concentrated in one place!

Looking for something else in my university library, I
stumbled across what seems to be a great supplement to
a beginning method books: "Take Up the Clarinet" by
Chris Morgan, from England. Volume 1 which I found is
all tunes with piano accompaniment, but from many
different parts of the world, and all with chord
symbols and encouraging text to get the students to
try rudimentary improvising. There's even the base of
Pachelbel's Canon with a suggested improvisation after
the spelled-out chords.

Anyone know this one already? It looks like a good way
to get the creative part of the equation happening
early. Published in 1993 by Chester Music.

I'm also listening to "Clarinet Classics" re-issue of
the original Neilsen recordings, Concerto by Louis
Cahuzac and Quintet and Serenata in Vano with Aage
Oxenvad himself. These guys sound great, I can't
believe they got the clarinet sound full and not
sounding like the players were recording into that
oversize bullhorn they used to use.

Another discovery in the library was a huge 400-page
tome, "Who Wrote the Mozart Four-Wind Concertante?" by
well-known keyboard virtuoso Robert Levin, who was
apparently encouraged to publish this by our own Dan
Leeson. Although there was no definite conclusion
about exactly who engineered the clarinet coup that
kicked out the original flute part, this is about as
exhaustive a study as I can imagine. Light summer
reading!

Be well,
