Subj: [kl] I need Reed information

As the oldest living undergrad clarinetist at U of MD. I get to spend a lot
of time hanging in the ICA library. One thing really amazes me. There is not
very much that is written about reeds. The stuff that's written isn't very
deep. For instance, the Opperman reed book. Basically it takes you to a point
where you have a decent blank then tells you to whittle a reed. Not a lot of
measurements, not a lot of design perimeters. Just make the reed.
Now I've been making my own reeds for a few years now. I've enjoyed it a lot
more since I've gotten Deluttus's Reed machine. But the one thing with the
Reed machine, or the Reedual, is you need a model reed. I've gotten to the
point where I can make a damn good replica of the model reed that I've
chosen, But if I loved the model reed that much I wouldn't have started to
make my own. So I would like to hear from this list about reeds. I want to
hear about proportions, measurements, I want some science!
As a group I find it amazing that we (myself included) think that a
mouthpiece and a Barrel will have a greater effect on sound and response then
the reed does. I've done it had boxes of crappy reeds and decided that my
mouthpiece was to blame. But since I've started making my own mouthpieces I
have found that if a mouthpiece facing is somewhat in the ball park, there is
a reed that will work on it. I'm not saying that mouthpieces have no effect.
They are very important. But if we took all the mouthpieces and facing
measurements that all of us play, we would probably find out that the numbers
aren't that different from each other. And probably that's the same with
reeds. So let me hear from those of you that are making your own.!!!!
Sorry for the rant
