Dan: Thanks for putting this news out. I followed John as professor of
clarinet at the University of Arizona in 1984 and served there for a brief
time, before I joined the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University in
1987. I always appreciated the gentlemanly fashion with which John related
to me during those three years.

Godspeed John. We pray for your speedy recovery.

There have been several comments lately about playing Fiddler on the
Roof. For those who saw the movie, you should be aware that it was John
Denman who played all the solos so magnificently.

But there is a terrible problem with John and I want to make you all
aware of it. According to the Arizona Daily Start of Aug. 14, 2001,
John has a cancerous tumor on his esophagus that was discovered only
last April. A feeding tube has been inserted into his stomach. While
he strains to speak, his greatest fear is not being able to play the
clarinet, which he continues to do.

John is 68. A picture of him appears in the article and it is possible
perhaps to get a copy of it on the web. The URL for the paper is WWW.
AZSTARNET.COM but I cannot be sure that the article has been retained.
