Subj: [kl] Doreen's clarinet playing in the square with her husband on Tuba
Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 08:01:43 -0400

I spent all of Thursday with my cousin, who is from Gulfport, and we
went to the French Quarter for an afternoon of sight seeing and heard
Doreen playing a duet with her husband on Tuba. They really sounded
terrific and I bought 2 CD's of hers. I think she has released 8 or
more. Anyhow, Doreen does have a degree in clarinet from somewhere
around there, but the symphony folded years ago and she likes playing
traditional New Orleans style jazz. My cousin ran to the car and got my
clarinet and I played a set with Doreen. She stayed a little bit closer
inside the changes than I do, but she sure had a beautiful style and
technique for traditional jazz. I enjoyed her talent very much and will
try to get her to join the list.
On Friday when we went to hear Pete Fountain, I thought to myself
"I would much rather be hearing Doreen Ketchuns". Her husband was really
cool. Every once in a while he would get a little frisky and start
playing riffs from Miles Davis' "All Blues" on the tuba. I wonder why
John Reeks and the planners for ClarinetFest 2001 didn't think of hiring
their band? ANNIE
