I didn't get to hear Al's presentation because my cousin, who lives
nearby in Gulfport, came to see me that day. But I did spend some time
with him and his two daughters. The night of the opening concert I was
sitting with them and enjoying their company as they finished their
Cajun Welcome meal. They wanted to drink some more wine, so they asked
me to save them some seats in the concert. After the first couple of
numbers they all came in with big goblets full of wine. Then in between
numbers, a young lady sitting in front of us turned around to Al and
said, "My teacher, Mr. Phillips says that he's older than you, and he
used to play with you in the Paul Whiteman Orchestra." A few minutes
later she brought Mr. Phillips over and he an Al started reminiscing in
between numbers, including a remembrance of Al's rendition of Nola.
Phillips had also played principal clarinet in the Seattle Symphony for
30 years under Meridith Wilson. He said he was 90. Then the girls (Al's
daughters) went out for more wine and a cigarette break (Pall Mall non
filters). They all made me feel really welcome in the concert hall, and
I found out later that they have been helping Al produce some jazz
educational materials by playing the piano accompaniments. I also sat
and had a drink with them late Saturday night. These folks were always
ready to party with anybody and sign a few CD's that they carried along
in a brief case. I didn't see any signs of them slowing down whatsoever.
The girls always looked great and wore pointed high-heeled shoes. My
ankles swell up at sea level (I'm a Colorado girl) and I could barely
move around in my Merrills.
By the way, I loved the concert, and I could hear Mary Jo humming
along to Rigoletto while Ricardo performed. ANNIE
