When I was playing every day, I would start out with an F scale, whole
notes, at quarter note equals 69 - 72, and count out 8 beats, either at a
sustained dynamic, steadily decreasing dynamic or increase on the first four
beats and decrease on the last four beats. I would play the entire scale up
an octave. Then I would play the C scale in the clarion register (if I
wasn't being lazy, in a hurry or both!) in the same fashion. Now, the
important thing to remember about playing the long tone warm ups in this
fashion is to LISTEN TO YOURSELF FOR GOOD SOUND. Don't just play the notes
to be playing the notes and getting through it. Also, you have to truly
super-concentrate on supporting your air with your abdominal muscles while
playing these scales. Concentrating on proper breathing while playing these
nice slow notes also has the added benefit of relaxing one's embouchure and
"setting" it so that one can play well and with flexibility, not with
tightness and tension. This is what is getting you ready to play the rest of
your practice session, rehearsal, concert, whatever.

I used the Baermann 3 for further warm-ups. (I am one of those folks who
needs a LOT of warming up. I just don't feel as comfortable playing cold.)
I would choose a key, then play each exercise only in that key, starting
the metronome at a slow tempo for smoothness, focus and breathing, then
doubling it for technique and finger warm-up.

Just so you will not think I am taking credit for these lovely bits of
clarinet torture, they were passed on to me by David Niethamer who knows how
to practice AND how to teach his students how to practice. Thanks, David.
