To begin with the one by Martin Powell and Stephen Robbings, "Son et
Lumiére": Great cd. Beautiful tone, nice repertoire, though not strikingly
surprising. The Saint-Saëns sonata was a surprise to me, but that is because
the only times I heard it played, it was played by Rien Stein, and as I have
said on this list before, he is not a very good player, but just a mediocre
amateur.

Most of the works on this cd are well-known, I think, but there is one
exception: a sonata by Wilfred Josephs. A nice work, when I come to the
music store in Utrecht I will buy it, and try to play it myself. This is a
cd I can recommend to everyone.

That latter remark I will also make of the cd David Hattner made: "The
clarinetist composer". This cd contains works written mainly for educational
purposes, yet worth while to be heard outside stdio and class room. David
has a brilliant tone, quite well suiting the brilliant works he plays, never
getting sharp (in this case I mean by "sharp" an ear-cutting sound like say
an electric guitar, not : high). Beautiful, very enjoying, I think to the
amateur and to the pro.

What is a little bit frustating, of course is to hear some works played with
such a lot of souplesse where you yourself have been sweating blood sweat
and tears. It made me decifde to study even harder - though that probably
won't really help.

Both cd's are worth to be purchased.

PS I have no personal interest in this big advertisement: I know neither
David nor Martin personally.
