One of the principle advantages of crystal mouthpieces (jokes about "clear"
tone notwithstanding) is that the facing is quite permanent; that is, not
subject to wear and change over time, due to the hardness of the
material. They are, naturally, VERY vulnerable to damage by dropping,
probably their biggest drawback for beginners. Besides that, I find it
very difficult to get a good grip with my teeth, due to the cold and
ungiving hardness. A mouthpiece patch is practically a must unless you
play double lip. They do tend to be somewhat variable, since the material
is hard to work with, and are often relatively expensive. The O'Brien
crystal I have plays well, particularly in the upper registers, but has a
very weak-sounding chalumeau and is quite resistant overall. I switched
from it to the Woodwind K10M (hard rubber) for concert band work to gain
the better bottom end and freer blowing, although it really blended well in
the section. As always, of course, your mileage may vary.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
