Ann, while you are correct in that any of the three sections of the
Mendelssohn concertpieces can be done separately (because each ends on
the tonic chord), it makes no sense to perform them that way. First,
each of the sections would be too short to be a stand alone piece and,
more important, the purpose of a concertpiece was to show a variety of
styles; i.e., lyrical, technical, lively, etc. Doing any single section
defeats that purpose.
