Subj: [kl] Selmer's new bass clarinet to low C

Just had a chance to sample Selmer's new 37 bass clarinet to low C. I
was interested because I have owned a 33 for many years and really love
it.

The low note extensions are quite different on their latest horn. Low Eb
is back in the lower right hand corner, just like on a bass that goes to
only low Eb. They still have the left hand Eb (G#/D#) lever. The right
hand D is now on the top row, below the right hand C.

If memory serves me, there is a left hand low C. The only low Db is
below the thumb rest. There is a ramp for the thumb that goes to the low
Db and the Db has a roller on it. The Db key is flat and the thumb can
sweep downward onto a thumb low C. These changes and this configuration
are much more logical than on my horn.

The new clarinet plays better than my 33. The new Selmer is totally
stunning in sound, evenness, tuning and in every other possible way. The
extended low note machinery is simpler and easier to adjust and keep in
adjustment. The stock mouthpiece aint' too bad either.

Yes, they're a ton of money, but when compared to the price of a fine
bassoon, they're still a bargain!
