Emily -

The 2 Woodwind K10M mouthpieces that I received with my pair of Leblanc
Concertos several years ago were good "journeyman" mps. Whether by accident
or design, they worked well only on the horns that they came with. They
were not very interchangeable.

I used them for several months and had the "luxury" of not having to change
mouthpieces from Bb to A in orchestra. For me and those horns they were
superior to the Vandoren mps that I had tried. I used them until I
discovered that I still had my Goldbeck mpc (Circa 1940) from way back in my
student days. A great mouthpiece!!! 1.02 tip which works great for me
using V12 3 1/2 reeds. I had mistakenly thought that I could play better on
a more open tip, but not so.

It is just an educated guess, but if those gouges are large, I'm sure they
could cause all sorts of mischief. As others much more knowledgeable than
me have commented on the list, the K10M mouthpieces are good quality showing
more careful manufacture than many other mass produced mpcs, including
Vandoren. (The gouges must have slipped by their people.)

I did get the mouthpiece out to give it a blow - and when I did, something
caught my eye. I saw what at first I thought was dirt inside the mp. I went
to clean it out with a swab. But when I looked in a better light I saw what
it really was: two deep scratches around the sides of the chamber (i think -
not to good with my technical terms) just below the level of the bottom of
the opening. Now I'm fairly sure I didn't do this as I only played on the MP
for a month tops when I got my clarinet. The reason I stopped was because my
sound was stuffy to the extreme - a permanent loud, wet hiss - I sqeaked a
lot. I couldn't control the sound. Would these massive gouges have anything
to do with this?
Any enlightenment gratefully received!
