I'm sorry to hear of Larry Adler's death. I spent three summers doing
research at UCSD from 1987 to 1989 and I saw him in concert with the San
Diego Symphony at one of its Mission Bay concerts under the stars. He was
an incorrigible self-promotor to be sure (I hardly believe, for example,
that Maurice Ravel ever said, on hearing Larry play "Bolero", that "It
sounds as though I composed it for the kid."), but it was delightful to
hear him perform in person many things I had enjoyed up to that time only
on our classical music radio station. An added treat that evening was some
duets performed by Larry and his brother, also a harmonicist.
