Subj: [kl] Two flea market Eb clarinets
Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2001 02:31:09 -0400

My wife and I have just returned from traveling in France and England.
While we were in Paris, July 2-9, I was a reluctant visitor one Sunday
morning to the flea market at Porte de Vanves (I hate flea markets). One
vendor had two Buffet Eb clarinets. They both seem to have had terrible
care. The cobwebs inside the bores attested to storage in an attic for a
long time. The cork on the tenons had come off and an earlier owner had
wound thread on them to seal the joint. Also, one bell seems to have been
sealed in place with pad shellac. In any case, the vendor wanted 1200
francs for each and I offered him 100 (about $14 U.S.) for the one with the
case. He didn't touch my offer even though one of his colleagues laughed
and told him that he ought to sell it to me for that.

Anyway, if any of you are wandering through the Porte de Vanves flea market
and the clarinets are still there, the comments above reflect my experience.

It's good to be back.

Oliver
