Patricia wrote (in part):
>>. I always felt
intimidated, and tense most of my musical life by screaming conductors
and
other people who behaved like raving lunatics. How on earth can anyone
relax and truly play their instrument in such an atmosphere? <<
Patricia,

Kato' has addressed this issue in her books and workshops, in general and
very specifically.

The short answer has two main points:

use the practice organization and skills to keep yourself
physically comfortable,
and
focus on the music.

To put it on the basic emotional level, conductors and teachers can be
worried that they "are not good enough." In most cases, those people
want the music to sound right. They may not give information in a
useable form.
"You (all) don't play soft worth a dam."
translates to
"The preceding passage should be
(would be more effective) quieter."

I have been in two situations were leaving (temporarily or permantly) was
my solution, several others when working on my attitude allowed me to
play and enjoy playing.
