Jim says :

At band camp this week one of the tenor sax players asked me about a problem with the air coming out of the nose at the same time he is playing. He said it started in the middle of the year last term.>>

When I was a senior in high school, I had my tonsils and adenoids out. Our family doctor had decided that I was NOT going to outgrow my continual ear/nose/throat problems and recommended the operation.

Was I surprised when I started playing again! Air leaked out my nose when I played! Not only did it make a funny sound, but it tickled like crazy too!

Even six months after the operation air still leaked. I remember being quite embarrassed at being stopped in a scholarship audition, by a prominent local teacher, and being asked, "What's that funny noise?"

It took about a year for me to be able to close off the nasal passages.

Jim, you might want to ask your student if he has had any throat or oral procedures done. Failing that, you might suggest he be checked by a ENT specialist.
