I'd like to add my voice (and that of my colleagues James Campbell and Eli
Eban) to the support of Abe's wonderful book. All three of us have used
his book for a number of years with our students at Indiana, and I
personally think it does a wonderful job of addressing the registral
voicing difficulties inherent on the clarinet. Abe is a firm believer in
establishing the natural, and high, tongue position in the chalumeau
register and then keeping that mostly in place as one ascends through the
registers. The book is designed to build on this concept.

The book puts a new face on old concepts, and Abe's composed etudes at end
in the style of various composers are superb. In the middle there are
very useful borrowings from Kroepsch and Klose. I find that it nicely
targets the usual problems of tone, technique and staccato (just like
the title), and it is a book I regularly work out of myself.
