Subj: RE: [kl] Opus or Concerto and Stewart's Embouchure Problem

Stewart -

I have never experienced the problem that you are having with your
embouchure. When I returned to playing in 1996, I soon reached a point that
I practiced 1 hour AM and 1 hour PM every day. I now practice 2 to 4 hours
a day generally in one evening session and have missed very few days since
1996.

I just finished a 3 hour session: half on Langenus and Baermann III and half
on the Brahms Sonata No. 1.

My guess would be that, if there is no neurological problem, gradually
increasing your practice time, with considerable time spent on long tones.
Long tones are what built my embouchure quickly back in 1996. Langenus and
Kroepsch helped rebuild my technique.

General info: My set-up is: Leblanc Concerto, Goldbeck mouthpiece, 1.02
tip (Goldbeck taught the elder Kaspar), Rovner Eddie Daniels ligature,
Vandoren V12 31/2 reeds (after I work on them, they are probably closer to
33/4). Oh yes, I'll be 73 next Monday and still going strong. (Clarinet is
my "golf" and "anti-senility medicine").

Gene,

As a fellow returnee to the clarinet after many years, have you noticed any
weakness in the jaw or mouth muscles? This has been bothering me for
months, even though I play every day for 30 to 40 minutes. I seem to need
to rest the chops every 10 minutes or so. And as recently as a year ago I
never had this problem. As recently as 4 years ago I played for hours with
no problem. I stopped again, then started about 2 years ago. This
time...problems.
