I play an Opus Bb clarinet, I had the opportunity to also play several
Concertos as there is a local music store in town that seems to promote
more Leblanc instruments than Buffet. There are only a few differences
between the Opus and Concerto, bore size is the same (.575"). You can
get the Concerto in silver plated keys or nickel, but the Opus is all
silver plate. Also the wood is unstained on the Opus and stained on the
Concerto. They are essentially the same clarinet. However, after
letting several people try my Opus (R-13 players), they are not used to
how separated the left hand E/B F#/C# keys are. You may think you're
going for the F#/C#, but you don't go out far enough and end up hitting
the aux Ab/Eb. I had my repairman bend these keys closer together than
usual but the difference is still noticable for people who don't play on
it a lot.
And from what I've heard, some people just can't get used to that feel.
Another factor you might want to consider is weight. There is quite a
bit of difference in weight between the 2 brands, again something you
may or may not notice. The advantages I get out of it definitely
outweigh (no pun intended) those issues though, I love my Opus. :) Hope
this helps.

Subject: [kl] Opus or Concerto

I am thinking of buying a new Leblanc Bb clarinet and
am torn between the Opus and the Concerto. In the long
term how useful is the extra Ab/Eb key on the Opus?
Some people say that the Concerto has a more lyrical
sound...also the 189SL model has in line "jump" trill
keys while the Opus has offset trill keys. I know that
it's a matter of personal preference and obviously I
will try both, but I would really value the opinion of
any one who has played either instrument over a period
of time. Thanks.
