But if one is attempting to protect one system over another, I would have
thought that by saying that both systems have their own merits, is not
logically substantiating what in the first place you are trying to protect.
I think this has not been phrased too intelligently. If they are saying
<both> systems have their merits, why do they bother to say that; that could
weaken their argument, when they are trying to protect their own favourite
clarinet, at the expense(?) of the French model.
