as well as German Clarinets are manufactured in Japan...
I don't know, if there is a true difference in quality (of tone,
technique). I tried a french clarinet from a friend for a few weeks: The
fingerings are different, but there are advantages and disadvantages in
both systems. The instrument was not very good so I cannot comment on
tone.

I question, why any system has to 'win in the end'. Are clarinetists less
tolerant than double-reed players ;-) ?

The biggest problem is that of the small market. A German system costs
about 2 times a French system (industrially manufactured). I think the
cause is only the large amount of French clarinets that are produced
worldwide. It would be interesting to compare prices of handmade clarinets
from local instrument makers of both systems.
