Subj: [kl] Tuning a mouthpiece
Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 01:01:49 -0400

There has been a lot of talk recently about mouthpiece tuning, but I
find that I am very confused about this subject. Somewhere I heard or
read that a mouthpiece is tuned if you can produce an F# or a G in the
clarion register, using only the mouthpiece, reed, and ligature. This
is probably all wrong and, by saying it, I have surely revealed my
'ignorantia vix credibilis' to the whole world!

How do you tune a mouthpiece? (Maybe you tune the instrument rather than
the mouthpiece.) Do you assemble the entire instrument, and then start
pulling or pushing the mouthpiece while sounding a note in conjunction
with a tuner? Or do you perform the same procedure, but pull or push
the barrel? Or do you perform the same procedure, but pull or push the
upper and lower joints, or maybe the bell? And what note are you tuning
for? Please send help asap. I'm sitting in an orchestra right now, and
my solo part is coming up fast. Is it too late to change the reed?

TIA.

J.O'Neill
