Catering to students wants is certainly one way to go about it, and I think
in the long run it inspires a greater love for the instrument in the
student. However, there are problems with this. For instance, the bass
player at my school finished last year, and when we went to the bass teacher
for suggestions as to his replacement, we were astonished to learn that not
only do his students not play much else than Korn, that not one of them is
capable of reading real music, only tab. Surely a line must be drawn
somewhere.
