Tony, don't you think it's possible that some of the loud Heavy Metal
music will just die out on it's own, due to lack of consumers? For a
while, here in Colorado Springs, live music seemed to die out and go the
way of DJ's and heavy metal bands. It lasted for about 3 years. I guess
the club owners thought that the customers actually liked that kind of
music. All of a sudden the metal invasion ended as quickly as it had
started, and jazz came back. When the loud music was popular, the clubs
catered to a younger crowd that had no money to spend and they could
barely afford the cover charge, let alone dinner and drinks. I guess
what I'm saying, Tony, is that maybe the music industry made a mistake
by promoting too much crap, and maybe some of the music will go away on
it's own due to lack of support. I hope so. I love to go out and hear
good music, and for a long time I was staying home. It does make me sick
that people like Marilyn Manson have such huge followings, especially
with "trench-coat Mafia" types. I don't believe in censorship, but I do
wish that Marilyn Manson would drop dead. Too many young kids have tried
to act out their fantasies with guns. Columbine HS is just an hour away
from my house.
Tony, I personally enjoy arranging certain popular tunes for my
students. Although I don't care for Celine Dion's singing at all, I have
made a gorgeous arrangement of the TITANIC THEME, and my students love
playing it. You've heard my arrangement. Do you really disapprove of
teaching kids melodies of popular tunes? I even printed up my
arrangement on cute stationery with fishes on the bottom (no dead
bodies). Don't you think that it's possible for some teachers to be
effective teaching both popular and classical music? At the store where
I teach, many students are taking clarinet lessons one day, volleyball
the next. I have rarely lost a student. I suppose I am catering to them,
but I want them to continue and get good. I do have a beautiful picture
of Jon Manasse in my studio, and I play his CD's all the time for my
kids. I personally don't play any Kenny G for my saxophone students. His
picture is not allowed in my studio. ANNIE
