I manage a discussion list for fans of a particular folk singer.

Occasionally (seems to be cyclical) we get into a discussion of "what is
folk music" followed closely by "this singer is a good singer" or "this
singer isn't." In the folk singer world, the aesthetic value of a singer
seems to be inversely proportionate to his or her commercial success. John
Prine is good, John Denver was bad; Lucy Kaplansy or Kate Campbell (former
clarinet player) are good, Jewel is bad.

So what is good musicianship? Is it someone who can whip through the Copland
and Till Eulenspiegal without error, or is it the busker I heard on State
Street last Saturday (on a pilgrimage to the Sherry-Brener store), who went
easily from the Rondo of the Mozart to Perdido to an incredible version of
Summertime?

Fun discussions to have, impossible to quantify.
