Subj: [kl] To Beatles or not to beatles...

I just love this discussion. I am new to this board juggling mothering a
three year old and my activity as a music education student I rarely
have the luxury of staring at a computer screen but I am enjoying a
summer vacation so here I am.

All that's on my stand now is the rose etudes otherwise I mostly play by
ear .

This discussion particularly interests me as for years my musical
activity consisted of sitting around a campfire with a guitar singing
beatles songs. While the Beatles are fantastically close to my heart the
8764th rendition of rocky raccoon starts to become a bit tiresome.

So I treaded back to school and for the past 2 years I have been slowly
delving back into the classical realm also becomming an avid Jazz fan.

One thing I think nobody has mentioned so far is the interrelationhip
between text and song. I mean I don't think anyone would ever say
schuman or schubert lieder is not music but in essence they are also
'merely songwriters'

Song is in a way its own art form. I don't think this makes a songwriter
less of a musician but often great songwriters might not be considered
great musicians. Bob Dylan for instance is in my opinion one of the
greatest songwriters ever. Where would we put him? I don't know.
